A wheely great job for Alice House
Local couple Gary and Lesley Wilkinson spent their May Day bank holiday with a group of cyclists from Durham Redstarts cycling club, cycling 140 miles from coast to coast and raising over £3,500 for Alice House Hospice.
Their route took them through the Lake District and over the Pennines to touch the sea at Tynemouth Beach. The weather was challenging at times, but the group were undeterred and enjoyed the scenery en-route to their first night’s accommodation at Stafford House in Greystoke.
On the second day, they supported each other up Hartside and Garrigills before resting overnight at the Allenheads Inn in Northumberland. By day three it was snowing, but months of training in winter conditions saw them through to Tynemouth where they were greeted by supporters and drank Prosecco on the beach.
Gary works for Seymour Civil Engineering who are Corporate Partners of Alice House and supported him and Lesley in their challenge.
Lesley said, “We’d like to say a huge well done to all of our lovely team, we have all trained hard and just kept pedalling. Gary and I have raised so much money for Alice House Hospice and are grateful to all those who sponsored us. It’s a tough ride, through some of the best countryside in the UK and we are very proud of ourselves at completing the challenge. We loved it, we smashed it!”
Greg Hildreth from the Hospice said “Massive thanks to Lesley and Gary on this fantastic achievement; it has been great hearing about their adventure and seeing the incredible levels of support and interest they have attracted. All of this support will be used to provide care for Hospice patients and their families and I would like to say a big thank you to Lesley, Gary and all of their supporters.”
