12 year old Joshua Moir-Young, a pupil at Dyke House School is using his time in lockdown to complete a fitness challenge in support of Alice House Hospice.
Joshua set himself the challenge of cycling 10 miles a day to cover the distance from Hartlepool to Gretna Green which is approximately 101 miles. Joshua expects to complete his 10 day challenge by 9 May and at the time of writing, has received donations exceeding £1,295 for his local hospice.
Joshua was initially motivated to do something to keep fit, whilst school was closed, but after talking to a neighbour Deb Robson, who works for Alice House, he decided to raise much needed funds for the patient care services which the Hospice provides.
Joshua’s dad Phil Moir-Young works for Exwold Techonolgy who are long term partners of the Hospice and his mam Jodie has been supporting him throughout his fundraising. Both are very proud of Joshua’s achievements. In the meantime, Joshua has also inspired his two younger cousins to start fundraising for Alice House.
Joshua said “I am so shocked at how much money I have raised so far. I only expected to raise around £100. Everything has been so exciting. I even got to go live on Greatest Hits Radio yesterday to tell them what I’ve been doing. I really hope I can do Alice House proud.”
Greg Hildreth, Deputy Fundraising Manager at Alice House said “Massive thanks to Joshua on his amazing fundraising success, as well as his ongoing physical challenge. What a great example to other young people of something really kind and positive to do during a time that is difficult for everyone, especially those affected by incurable illnesses. Thanks also to all of his supporters for their generosity and good luck to Joshua for the remainder of the challenge – I am sure you will smash it!”

All money raised will be used to fund the specialist care services that are provided by Alice House Hospice. At present the Hospice’s usual income streams have been hugely restricted by the coronavirus crisis, with shop closures and event postponements.
