Nurse and Dad go extra miles for Hospice Care
A hospice nurse has made the Great North Run a family occasion, whilst raising vital funds for the services she delivers every day to local patients.
Cheryl Dignen, a Registered Nurse at Alice House Hospice and her dad Trevor, 60 took part in their second consecutive Great North Run together in September, joining thousands of runners in the world’s biggest half marathon.
The Great North Run is 13.1 miles in length and takes around 60,000 runners from the start line in Newcastle to the sea front at South Shields.
The sporting duo raised around £600 for their chosen charity, which has been put to use funding the specialist care that the Hospice provides.
Cheryl said, “It was brilliant to share the day with my dad again, as well as training together and raising money for a great cause, which means a lot to us both. We would also like to say a huge thank you to everyone who sponsored us, cheered us on and made it all worthwhile.”
Trevor added, “Achieving this together was a proud moment for me as a dad and a special experience for us both, which we hope will make a difference to the families cared for by Cheryl and her colleagues at the Hospice, who do wonderful work for our community.
Until last year, I had a long-term ambition to take part in the Great North Run and Cheryl and Alice House have helped to make this happen for me and also given me the chance to make a difference to people in need of hospice care.”
This year’s event has so far raised over £15,000 for the Hospice, with sponsor money still coming in. We now taking names for a waiting next for charity places in next year’s run, which takes place on 7 September 2025 as well as inviting runners with their own places to run for Hospice care.
