Hawaii comes to Hartlepool at Hospice Summer Party

Alice House Hospice brought a flavour of Hawaii to this year’s Staff and Volunteer Appreciation Party, held in the Hospice Gardens in July. Around fifty people joined in the luau, enjoying themed mocktails, a sumptuous buffet and hula hooping in the summer sunshine. It has become the Hospice’s annual tradition to recognise its supporters with a summer party- a way to thank everyone who helps to keep the charity running.

Among the party-goers was Lorna Jones, whose mother, Alice Bendle, founded the charity and who has herself given more than forty-five years of service. Many of the attendees entered into the spirit of the South Pacific theme, donning leis, traditional skirts and flower crowns, while enjoying a wide variety of wonderful, themed dishes and drinks provided by the Hospice Catering Team.

It’s a tribute to Alice House that so many of its staff and volunteers were recognised with long service badges. Hospice Co-CEO, Nicky Haggan told the crowd: ‘Without the dedication of our incredible team, we would not be able to function. It’s so important to us that we acknowledge all the hard work you do for the Hospice and let you know how much we appreciate your commitment.’

In a written message to all who attended, Nicky and her fellow CEO, Sandra Britten said:

Thank you for the compassion you show, the comfort you give and the dedication you bring each and every day.

Your kindness touches lives in the most profound ways- offering care, dignity and peace when it’s needed most.

Whenever you’re by a bedside, behind the scene, or lending a listening ear, you are the heart of Alice House.

Because of you, our patients and their families feel supported, valued and never alone.

We are truly grateful for everything you do.

You make Alice House a place of warmth, love and hope.

With deepest appreciation,

Love Nicky & Sandra

Volunteers at the party agreed that our lives had been enriched by being part of such an important Hartlepool Charity. We’ve all enjoyed putting our skills to use, learning new ones and making new friends. Personally I would say, if you have some spare time on your hands, there will be a place for you in Volunteer Family, and you will be so glad you joined.
