Local Charities and College Collaborate on Groundbreaking Film
Alice House Hospice has worked in partnership with LGBTQ+ charity, Hart Gables to create a powerful new educational film aimed at raising awareness, promoting inclusivity, and improving accessibility to healthcare and end-of-life services for members of the transgender community.
The 20-minute video features interviews with Hart Gables staff, volunteers, and service users, alongside members of the Alice House clinical team and NHS Palliative Care Consultant, Donna Wakefield.
Together, they share personal experiences and expert insights into the barriers transgender people can face when accessing healthcare – particularly at end of life – and explore practical ways in which services can be improved to be more inclusive, supportive, and accessible.
Staff at Hartlepool College of Further Education filmed and produced the video and hosted a launch event to celebrate the project’s completion, bringing together the three organisations in celebration of the project’s completion.
Although the film will not be made public due to the sensitivity of some of its content, it is available on request from Alice House Hospice for professional healthcare providers, wising to learn more about better supporting the transgender community.
Greg Hildreth, Business and Communications Senior Manager at Alice House Hospice, said:
“This has been a valuable learning process which has helped to strengthen the bonds between organisations, which differ in their services, but are united in their commitment to equality and inclusivity.
“We are grateful to those who took part and shared their experiences so openly. Special thanks go to Hart Gables for their continued partnership and to Lauren and Brian at Hartlepool College for their vital behind-the- support in bringing this project to life.
“It is important for organisations to collaborate and share information and experience to bring about progress and we hope that our film helps with that and gives people the opportunity to learn and to empathise with perspectives that may differ from their own.”
