Brownies & Guides earn their badges
A local unit of Brownies and Guides held its first fundraising event for Alice House, enabling members to obtain the Charity Badge and completed a Skill Builder as part of the Guide programme.
The 10th Stranton Guides and 2nd Brownies, based in St Matthew’s Community Centre on Elwick Road nominated the Hospice as their chosen charity and met with staff members Greg Hildreth and Janice Forbes who delivered a talk on the work of Alice House and how funds are raised. Some of the Guides have family members who have received support from the Hospice.
The industrious young people got to work planning a fundraising coffee evening, held at the Community Centre on 12 June. In just over an hour the event, which was well attended by friends and family members, raised an incredible £600 from selling refreshments and gifts, raffle and tombola.
The Brownies and Guides are planning a visit to Alice House later in the year, to meet with some of the clinical staff and learn more about how their fundraising success makes a difference to Hospice patients and their families.
“It was a great night and it was obvious how hard the girls had worked; the atmosphere was lovely and everyone who attended was very generous indeed. It was a fantastic event and we were even given a card to thank Hospice staff for supporting local people, which was so nice to receive.”
Greg Hildreth, Business & Communications Senior Manager, Alice House
Cheryl Mills, who leads the Brownies as Brown Owl and Guides as Captain said, “The Guides took full ownership of the Coffee Evening, organising the setting up of the event and the making and selling of cakes and crafts. The Brownies were also amazing, serving at tables and chatting with visitors with smiles on their faces. We were all amazed at the money raised, thank you to all who came to support the girls and the cause.”
